MUNSTER | No scoring was tallied at the "Touchdowns for Life" 7-on-7 football tournament at Munster's Centennial Park on Friday. But that certainly didn't stop any coaches from getting in mid-season bark mode.

"It's all about just competing and having fun, but you still have to be successful," Lowell coach Kirk Kennedy said. "It's been a while since we thought about coverages or routes, and all the stuff we do out here playing 7-on-7, we try to realize that. But the barking is our way of reminding them what their job is."

Four fields were set up with Lake Central, Munster, Crown Point and Lowell each bringing their varsity and junior varsity teams to compete. The teams rotated offense and defense every 10 plays with each team getting a chance to play each other.

The football fundraiser was set to raise more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society, which aligned this year with Munster's "Relay for Life," which helps to fight cancer.

"I think it's a great event just to prove what the positive sides of athletics are," Munster coach Leroy Marsh said, who arranged the event with the help of his peers.

"It's good because these are four teams that have similar philosophies about athletics and coaching. It's not always that bitter side we hear about in sports, there is also a positive side. Giving back to those in need is important."

More than 200 skill position players each got a chance to gauge themselves against another team.

"You work all summer with your own team, and it's just nice to get out here with other teams and see what else is out there," Crown Point linebacker Brad Pusateri said. "We get to see where we stand up against everyone else."
