Sara Keilman told her teammates she didn't want to go down without a fight. She wasn't about to watch her season collapse in the first round of the CCAC playoffs.
"I told my teammates if we were going to lose - we're going down kicking, screaming, punching or biting," the sophomore forward said, after posting 18 points and 10 rebounds. "And we pretty much gave in."
Trinity Christian College Trolls took advantage of a worn-out PUC squad and defeated them 92-52 Monday night in Palos Heights, Ill. on the Trolls home court to end the Peregrines season.
Trinity Christian jumped out to a 20-5 lead on the sluggish PUC team with only eight minutes gone by in the first half of action. The shorthanded Peregrines couldn't stop the floodgates as the Trolls cruised to a 30-point lead with three minutes remaining in the first half, 42-12.
"We didn't get off to a good start," PUC coach Tom Megyesi said. "I thought we did not play with enough passion. We looked tired out there."
The Peregrines (7-24, 3-7 CCAC) went into the break, down 50-22, after hitting 24 percent (8-of-33) from the field. The Trolls (12-19, 4-6), however, took advantage of PUC's leaky defense and shot 50 percent from field in the first half.
A dejected Megysesi was very concerned about the lack of defense. PUC gave up 192 points in the last two games of the season.
"I think our defense has something to be desired to say the least. And that is going to be a major, major thing we're going to address for next year."
PUC defeated Trinity Christian on Feb. 6 by seven points, 72-65, at the REC Center but didn't show up ready to repeat the performance.
"Tonight was a fantastic game for us," Trinity Christian coach Liz Metcalfe said. "A couple weeks ago we lost to them by seven - it's hard to believe we beat them by 40 tonight."
Senior guard Linsey Smith finished her college career with 13 points and pulled down five rebounds.
"Hopefully we'll learn from this," Megyesi said, after completing his first season as PUC coach. "And I can refer to this in the future, this time next year that we're not going to go out like this"
Keilman had thoughts on how they can improve on their performance for next year.
"It seems like sometimes we can't motivate ourselves enough - and we need to. We need to start finding it in ourselves to play better," she said.
Trinity Christian's junior guard Amanda Learned scored her 1,000 career point early in the second half, finishing the game with 19.
