Women's Basketball: Slow start leads to Peregrines defeat

Judson University head coach Jim Cook was content on letting PUC shoot from the perimeter and having someone step up for the Peregrines besides senior Linsey Smith.

Judson packed in a zone and forced the Peregrines to shoot 34 percent from the field en route to beating PUC 74-61 on Saturday night in front of the homecoming crowd at the REC Center.

"I told my team, we need to make sure we take care of the basketball and force them to shoot from the outside," Cook said. "We tried to make other players beat us ... and not number 44 [Smith]."

PUC (6-21, 2-5 CCAC) was beat in transition early and often in first half by Judson and was slow to respond trailing 25-12 with 7:35 remaining in the half. The Eagles (9-14, 4-3) kept the ball rolling down the court and led at the break 41-26.

"We dug ourselves a hole early and we couldn't get out of it," PUC head coach Tom Megyesi said.

There were a few anxious moments in the second half when PUC took advantage of Judson's carelessness with the ball. The Peregrines cut the 15-point deficit down to within 10 points, 52-42, when freshman guard Cortney Robinson buried a mid-range jumper on the left side at 10:36 to go in the contest.

Judson then put the heat back on defense and pulled open the lead to 63-46 with eight minutes remaining, which they never looked back from.

"We needed to play a full 40 minutes - especially against one of the better teams in our conference," Shannon Dugan said, who added 17 points and 10 rebounds in the loss, her second straight double-double.

PUC leading scorer, Smith added 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Robinson added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Eagles shot 45 percent from the field, most of which came from the paint, knocking down only two three-pointers for the entire game.

Judson was led by Alicia Rovertoni and Theresa Larson each chipping in 18 points.
