Cornerstone University came running into the REC Center gym on Friday night with an 8-2 record and continued to run the Peregrines right out of the gym with a 76-49 victory.

The quick transition displayed by the Golden Eagles was too much for PUC to handle as it led to an onslaught of easy layups.

Cornerstone (9-2) was led by Brooke Carter's 18 points and 10 rebounds.

"I thought the fastbreak worked really well," said Cornerstone head coach Carla Fles. "We have some girls with speed and we pride ourselves on getting out quick."

Cornerstone jumped out to a 7-0 lead before PUC senior guard Linsey Smith buried a 23-foot three-pointer as a counterpunch.

Smith's 17 point effort was not enough for the Peregrines (3-9) in the defeat.

"I think we played very lackadaisical tonight," said Smith. "We seemed tired and frustrated and when it came to our defense - nobody took part in it.

Cornerstone led at the break 46-28. PUC only shot 27 percent from the field, while being outrebounded by the Golden Eagles by 16.

"We feel very sad that we lost tonight, because we felt we could have put a better effort," said PUC head coach Tom Megyesi.
"Especially in the first half; it seemed like we were running in mud. Hopefully it's a mental thing of us being tired, instead of a physical thing. They have to be accountable for their efforts as well as I have to be accountable for my coaching. We as a group need to get better before conference play in January," he added.

Playing in her first game of the year for the Peregrines, Rhiannon Howard, a 6-foot-5 reserve center contributed with six points and three blocked shots.

Freshman guard Jenny Britton ended her season against St. Francis on Wednesday Dec. 6 when she tore her ACL in her left knee.

"It's terrible - I haven't stopped crying," said the 5-foot-4 Britton.

Britton played in 11 regular season games in her freshman season.
